Good news for sustainable mobility: Emilia-Romagna is intensifying efforts to strengthen the infrastructure dedicated to bicycles and pedestrian paths, aiming to improve eco-sustainable mobility for city and extra-city travel, leaving the car in the garage home.

The decision was taken by the Regional Council, which decided to allocate another 8 million euros, coming from the 2021/2027 ERDF funds, to finance 9 further projects presented by local authorities such as the Metropolitan City of Bologna, the provinces, the Municipalities and the Unions, as proof of a great commitment. Initially, in fact, the tender provided for a total financing of 17 million euros, but now with the addition of additional funds, the total available has increased to approximately 25 million euros, allowing a total of 25 projects to be financed.

Objective: reduction of emissions

This initiative is part of a broader strategy aimed at promoting the creation of new cycle paths throughout the Region and which also includes other financing instruments within the ERDF. Since 2019, the Emilia Romagna Region has contributed financially to the creation of approximately 670 additional kilometers of cycle paths in the Municipalities, of which 186 kilometers are part of the national cycle path network. The total value of these projects is around 155 million euros, divided between state, regional and local co-financing.

The new funded projects include interventions such as the redevelopment of cycle/pedestrian sections, the construction of new cycle paths along waterways and the creation of cycle paths that connect different urban areas. Of the 25 approved projects, a significant part concerns the province of Bologna, followed by other provinces such as Forlì-Cesena, Ferrara, Modena, Piacenza, Parma, Reggio Emilia and Rimini. This significant regional initiative is in line with national objectives for adaptation to climate change which include an increase in cycle paths to reduce emissions by 55% by 2030, also aligning with the European Union Regulation on air quality.

The selected projects will benefit from capital co-financing, which will cover 60% of the eligible investment, with a further 10% premium for those projects that are integrated into cycling circuits of national or international importance or that are promoted by municipalities involved in protection of air quality. All approved projects must be completed by 31 December 2025, thus ensuring rapid development of sustainable mobility infrastructure in the region.

Solutions by GaraGeeks

Pedestrian and cycle paths can also be enriched with smart urban furniture such as charging stations for electric bicycles (e-bikes) designed and created by GaraGeeks, solutions that do not require connections to the electricity grid and which are 100% rechargeable with energy solar.

Stop&Charge Shelter is a charging shelter for bicycles, scooters and electric wheelchairs perfect for promoting micro-mobility and cycle tourism. In addition to providing electric vehicle charging points, it also includes a bench and Wi-Fi internet access. It is also ideal in cities to facilitate the work of two-wheeled couriers, extending the autonomy of e-bikes and allowing longer and more frequent journeys.

Stop&Charge Solar 2.0 is a charging station equipped with video surveillance and an emergency call button. It also monitors air quality, can recharge smartphones, e-bikes and other vehicles at up to 300W, offering a large information surface and access to Wi-Fi internet, acting as an illuminated reference point for those traveling along cycle paths. Solar 2.0 is made with durable materials such as stainless steel, birch wood and Corian, and the entire production chain is 100% Italian.

By equipping themselves with Stop&Charge Shelter and Stop&Charge Solar 2.0 by GaraGeeks, Municipalities, Public Administrations and institutions can offer an important service to citizens, promoting sustainable mobility and increasing the autonomy of many citizens.
