The future of solar energy is no longer limited to sustainable energy production; it is about to transform into a fundamental element of street furniture, combining functionality and design in everyday objects such as shelters, benches and e-bike charging stations.

This development marks a significant evolution in the perception and use of solar energy, which now promise to improve not only energy efficiency but also the quality of life in urban areas.

Photovoltaics in Urban Design

The integration of photovoltaics in street furniture represents a rapidly expanding field, fueled by continuous innovation and the growing demand for sustainable solutions. Commonly used objects, such as bus shelters,  benches and e-bike charging stations, are transformed into self-sustaining structures that produce clean energy, demonstrating how sustainability can blend with modern design.

The choice of innovative materials and technologies is crucial to guarantee energy efficiency and durability over time. The structures are, in fact, subjected to bad weather, temperature variations, and, unfortunately, also to vandalism.

Street furniture materials that integrate with solar panels combine aesthetics and functionality, promoting sustainability. Using stainless steel, aluminium, DuPont Corian and high quality wood, these furnishings not only resist to the elements, but, having integrated the photovoltaic panels that power public lighting and various functions, urban spaces are thus transformed into eco-efficient areas.

An example

A successful example of this integration is the city of Copenhagen, where bus stops are equipped with solar roofs that provide energy for night lighting. This not only reduces energy costs, but also promotes the use of environmentally friendly public transport.

The main challenge in adopting photovoltaics in street furniture lies in the need to balance functionality, energy efficiency and visual impact. It is essential that design is guided by a deep understanding of urban dynamics and the specific needs of the community.

Photovoltaic shelters

Solar shelters are designed to capture solar energy through integrated photovoltaic panels, while offering shelter and comfort to public transport users and beyond. These facilities can also power LED lighting, digital information displays and USB charging points, turning simple waiting into productive and comfortable moments.

Solar Benches

Smart Bench by GaraGeeks

Solar benches represent another emblematic example of this trend. In addition to providing a place to sit, these innovative benches incorporate solar panels that power USB ports for charging mobile devices, free Wi-Fi and sometimes even lighting systems for nighttime safety, enriching public spaces with cutting-edge technologies .

E-Bike Charging Stations

Solar-powered e-bike charging stations are becoming an increasingly common infrastructure in cities promoting sustainable mobility. By providing a fast and eco-friendly charging point for electric bicycles, these stations encourage the use of environmentally friendly means of transport. They contribute, substantially and significantly, to the reduction of pollution and urban traffic congestion.

Benefits and Challenges

The integration of solar panels in street furniture brings with it numerous advantages, including the reduction of CO2 emissions, the reduction of energy costs and an improved public perception of cities. However, challenges remain, especially in terms of initial costs, maintenance and harmonious integration with the existing urban landscape.

The future of photovoltaics in street furniture looks bright, with transformative potential that goes far beyond energy production alone. Cities are evolving towards greater sustainability. The elegant and functional integration of solar into urban infrastructure represents a crucial step forward, towards the goal of a greener and more technologically advanced future.

Solutions by GaraGeeks

Stop&Charge SMART BENCH  is a smart urban furniture element that expresses itself with the function of an intelligent bench powered by solar energy. It offers the possibility of sitting comfortably and quickly recharging your smartphone or tablet, thanks to the energy provided by the photovoltaic panels.

An element of sustainable urban furniture

Our bench was born from the collaboration with an interior design studio. It is characterized by the union of a modern style of round shape with new technological solutions. These solutions are equipped with smartphone chargers and lighting to create atmosphere even at night.

Where to place it

The Stop&Charge SMART BENCH can be installed in private outdoor spaces such as those of shopping centers and shops or public ones such as squares, parks, schools, universities, hospitals.  It does not require any anchoring to the ground, thanks to the adjustable feet and ballasts, which allow the bench to simply be placed on the ground.

Features and functionality

With Stop&Charge SMART BENCH , thanks to the two integrated wireless charging points with Qi standard and the double USB ports with fast charging, users have six charging points at their disposal. These charging points are compatible with both mobile devices that support wireless charging and those that require a USB cable . The solar energy operation guarantees the independence of the hi-tech bench from the connection to the electricity grid, thus avoiding the need for excavations.

Our smart bench features an atmospheric LED backlight system at night.

The choice of materials and the entire production chain are 100% made in Italy.
